Emily Elders
Emily Elders
Emily Elders is a Roseville, CA based printmaker since 1994. Her prints explore everything from the corner honky-tonk to the expansion of the American West from the advent of the railroad through the rise of the automobile. Social change is obliquely observed, but not a main concentration; Emily explores recent history of the western landscape beginning with the words of American popular song: American folk song from the unnamed authors of old Scots ballads through the folk revival so strong in the 1950’s and ’60’s, and once again enjoying a revival -- this music is haunting, powerful and timeless.
Emily’s on-going project is to interpret the words with historically-based images rendered in the traditional printmakers format. She has presented two songs so far, exploring travel in times of recession in the first and taking on the repercussions of crime and incarceration in the second: next, she will be exploring the presence of death on the American landscape, and the unfortunate yet necessary traditions that informed survivors.
Emily’s vision and execution are unique and illuminating, drawing on a vast repository of knowledge.
